L is learning to add and subtract larger numbers and I just learnt long addition/subtraction at school. Is this what they do at school now? He is in year 2 by the way.

yes, they do. gets more complicated when you have exchanges so 100-73 for example but its' basically the same as when we did it.

Hi, they actually use lots of different ways to add. Your method is the formal way and they do start learning this. I found when we were helping our daughters we needed paper with squares to keep all the numbers in the correct spots so that they didn't get confused with the ones and tens. smiley

Hi Laura16,

Thank you for posting a question. The curriculum is focused on teaching  Fluency which means that children are lots of different ways to add and subtract at school. If you are not sure which method your school is using at the moment, speak to your son's teacher to check, but you are not wrong to help him by teaching the formal column method of adding and subtracting that you are describing.
